Martin Bittmann (*1987) runs an independent architecture practice focused on research, teaching and building around sustainable design.
He is co-founder and managing partner of the innovation and sustainability consultancy BuildSystems, co-initiator of the research and design practice Living Systems, and co-editor of the architecture magazine Planphase, which was published by the Architekturmuseum der Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich.
Martin’s professional experience includes work with renowned firms such as Herzog & de Meuron, Euroboden and raumstation Architekten. He holds a Diploma in Architecture from the the Technical University of Munich and studied at Istanbul Technical University.
In parallel to his practice, Martin has built a strong academic profile. He spent two years as a Research Associate at the Chair for Sustainability, Construction and Design at the University of Stuttgart, where he played a central role in establishing the teaching and research initiative Bauklasse Holz, focused on timber construction in architecture. Before that, he taught for four years at the Chair for Architectural Design and Timber Construction at the Technical University of Munich and was involved in research projects at the Technical University of Berlin.
He currently serves as an advisor on energy efficiency and sustainability for the Bavarian Chamber of Architects and contributes his expertise to a number of expert panels and advisory boards related to sustainable building and innovation.
Martin has received several awards and scholarships for his contributions at the intersection of architecture, sustainability and technology. These include the Gründungspreis+ or the Franz-Berberich-Preis of the Department of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich for outstanding project-based achievements in applied research. He was also awarded start-up grants such as EXIST and FLÜGGE, Bavaria’s support program for university-based start-ups in the fields of innovation, research and technology, for his venture Urban Scale Timber.
